"DEFENSIBLE SPACE" SEMINARS FOR HOUSING MANAGEMENT, POLICE AND SECURITY PERSONNEL

Purpose

There are two purposes to these seminars:

  1. to familiarize housing management and security personnel with the general principles and applications of "Defensible Space."
  2. to examine how these applications can be applied to the specific physical and social configurations of the housing projects in their locality.

All seminars involve slides and include breaks for substantial question and answer sessions with the audience.

1. Introduction to "Defensible Space" and CPTED Principles.

The birth of the concept and the prevailing need for its application.

2. The Physical Attributes of Crime Prevention

The role of physical design in facilitating social control of the spatial environment at the scale of: the city; the community; housing and commercial development; the individual unit.

3. Defensible Space Applications to Various Problem Situations

  1. Residential communities composed of single family houses
  2. The multi-family residential environment
  3. The shopping environment: the mall and strip commercial
  4. The office building environment
  5. The hotel/motel environment
  6. The industrial complex

4. The Role of Police in Applying Defensible Strategies

  1. The Plan Review Process by Police Departments — the use of staff from police departments to provide early review of plans submitted by architects and suggest ways to modify the plans for better security.
  2. The Community Education Process — the use of police to educate all elements of the community (residents, property owners, landlords, commercial managers, hotel managers, etc.) to the benefits of adopting physical modifications to improve security.
